Highlighting Recovery Every Year
We observe Recovery Month in September to celebrate the millions of Americans who are in recovery, and remind us that with accessible support, treatment, and strong community connections, people can and DO recover.
In partnership with the Washington Recovery Alliance, regional coalitions across the state, and local community partners, we promote and celebrate recovery during National Recovery Month through a variety of events and activities.
History of Recovery Month
National Recovery Month was created by the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in 1989 to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable people with behavioral health conditions to live healthy and rewarding lives.
The 2020 theme is Join the Voices for Recovery: Celebrating Connections.
In a time where we are all facing additional life stressors because of the impacts of COVID-19 on our communities, it’s more important than ever to get creative with how we can safely stay connected.
This year, we’re trying something brand new: a Recovery Month Scavenger Hunt.
You can participate on your own, with friends and family, however works best for you. We have a Facebook group for you to share your completed tasks and when you reach 65 points, you get a special prize.
Want to join in the (physically distanced) fun? Sign up here and we’ll email you access to the scavenger hunt, including submission instructions and the Facebook group, too!
Don’t have access to email? You can request a paper version of the scavenger hunt by emailing hello@warecoveryalliance.org or calling (253) 363 -9336.
